Climate Change Plan – or Kyotoscam?

Dear Editor:

The “Project Green” advertisement for the Kyoto plan in Canada’s newspapers is disturbing (Herald, 05/04/16). It implies that Kyoto is all about clean air and water, and wildlife and green space preservation. Nonsense.  Kyoto is about reducing greenhouse gases.

This deceptive ad is the most recent of a long series from our federal government on climate change. A massive four page ad in many of Canada’s newspapers in early 2002 aimed to convince Canadians climate change is an urgent issue. Then we were bombarded with TV and print ads featuring Rick Mercer urging us to take on the “One Tonne Challenge”. In this latest ad, Kyoto is the last of the many benefits listed.  The benefits of the Kyoto initiative to reduce greenhouse gas emissions are dubious.  We are all in favor of clean air, water and smog reduction. Perhaps that is why our government is now hitching its Kyoto commitment to the coattails of those important issues?  But why is Kyoto being pushed so hard?

The sponsorship program demonstrates there may be special interests related to government supported advertising campaigns. Are similar interests driving Kyoto?

Yours truly,

Duane Pendergast
