Letters

Canada's National Climate Change Process resulted in a well publicized series of stakeholder meetings across Canada in June of 2002. Several options for greenhouse gas management were presented to the public. The province of Alberta publicly proposed an alternative approach. Much history and more  details are available at website links provided at another section (See menu - Fora Input) of this web site.

A rousing debate was initiated by these superficially contrary positions. A frenzy of stories in Canada's newspapers ensued. Many of these showed little understanding of the climate change issue and proposed means of managing greenhouse gases. I began a letter writing campaign to try and clarify some of the more glaring errors and misconceptions. A selection of these letters, with supplementary commentary to place them in context and to indicate if and where they were published is provided.

The intense interest in the issue has subsided now that Canada has ratified the Kyoto Protocol. However, the climate change issue will not be going away. We can anticipate renewed interest from newspapers and I will continue to comment.

Russia  ratified the Kyoto Protocol before Christmas, 2004, with the result that Kyoto now goes into effect February 16, 2005. Participating countries will generally be required  to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions to below 1990 levels averaged over  five years from 2008 to 2012 inclusive. Canada is to lower emission to 6% below 1990 levels. Canada has made little progress in lowering emissions since the Kyoto Protocol was signed in 1997 and plans to date seem inadequate to many. It will be most interesting to see if and how we rationalize this goal in the three remaining years.
