Dear Editor:

Anne Dawson may be misinterpreting the final G8 statement on climate change. (NP, Saturday, July 9, 2005, A15). It is available on the Internet at http://www.g8.utoronto.ca/summit/2005gleneagles/climatechange.html

She writes; “leaders said global warming was “a serious and long-term challenge that has the potential to affect every part of the planet.”” A more complete, and correct, quotation reveals the G8 leader’s words are “Climate change is a serious and long-term challenge that has the potential to affect every part of the globe.”

The difference between “globe” and “planet” is insignificant, if careless. There is a big difference between climate change and global warming. Some scientists are more concerned with the challenge posed by global cooling and another ice age than with global warming associated with increasing greenhouse gases.

The more general wording of the G8 communiqué is probably not accidental.

Yours truly,

Duane Pendergast
